Weltausstellung / World Exhibition

Weltausstellung / World Exhibition

12 March 2021 - 10 April 2021 ath the Forum Stadtpark in Graz (Austria)

An exhibition based on the fascination about the spherical condition of our habitat, its spin, and its high speed through the universe. Elements in the exhibition try to grasp humans technical and rational attempts to comprehend spaceship earth and tame it.

As early as 1969, Buckminster Fuller wrote his „Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth“, a manual for a spherical vehicle that whizzes through space at top speed. It is a fascinating vehicle that we live in, a magical space that for a long time gave us the illusion of endlessness and standstill.

In the last 500 years we have got rid of these illusions and a vague assumption of space, a spherical assumption, that turned into certainty. And with the realization came the responsibility and all of a sudden it is up to us that this earth apparatus works smoothly. Air pollution, deforestation and nuclear energy endanger human life in the spaceship. Any wrongdoing can result in disaster.

In order to get a grip on the earth, we peeled off its fur and stretched it on a frame made of longitudes and latitudes. This basic structure of the spaceship earth is the starting point for the World Exhibition.

The lines on the floor of the exhibition space reveal the construction of Spaceship Earth. The visitors enter the technical version of the earth's space - a version that appears to us as absolutely measurable and controllable.

World Printer - a collaboration with Norbert Heinz

The World Printer prints a world map exactly once within 24 hours. After these 24 hours, the next map is added seamlessly, so that the earth's surface is slowly but steadily printed on endless paper. At the other end, the printout is destroyed by a razor blade that cuts the paper into strips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qqkj0rjJhI
